The Conference will address issues relevant to palm growers, entrepreneurs, researchers, plantation and palm oil mill technicians, other professionals of the oil palm sector, policy makers, the academy (professors and students), industries members of the chain of seeds, oleaginous crops, oils, fats, and palm oil derivatives, those who want to develop or strengthen commercial ties, and in general, to people interested in the oil palm sector.
Some of the key issues of debate, today and in the coming years, will be addressed at the International Conference during three days. The first day will be dedicated to plenary sessions and the next two days organized for the following three modules which will be held simultaneously:
-
Module 1: Breeding and Integrated Crop Management
-
Module 2: Palm Oil Processes and Uses
-
Module 3: Economics, Trade, and Sustainable Development
Growth of the demand for palm oil and palm kernel oil and their derivatives has increased significantly, promoting the development of world production, especially in Southeast Asia.
There is an important international debate on whether oil palm cultivation, its benefit and processing are sustainable from the economic, social, and environmental point of view.
From the economic point of view, the recession faced by developed countries has generated deceleration in demand, increase in stocks, and a fall in the prices of oil and basic goods, including palm oil. What short and long term effects will these changes have on the profitability and sustainability of the crop, and in the management of the crop and of the palm oil business? What differential effects will they have on small, medium, and large-scale oil palm growers? What are the prospects for biodiesel in the recessive situation and in the further economic recovery?
Some national and international NGOs have emerged in recent years with a critical view on the development of oil palm cultivation. How can oil palm sustainability be strengthened, how can oil palm cultivation continue growing and preserve natural resources for future generations? How can its international image be enhanced in the face of consumers, opinion leaders, governments and people interested in the sector?
The healthiness of the crop has not been ensured and therefore the challenges in its management acquire particular relevance. Breeding appears as one of the great opportunities for the crop and its entire value chain, to face pests and diseases, and to improve productivity and the quality of the oil. For this reason, it is necessary to expand the existing genetic base. In its turn, scientific development enables genomic characterisation and a faster introduction of materials with better characteristics for consumption and production, taking advantage of the high genetic variability which has not yet been sufficiently used.
The debates and perspectives on the effects of palm oil and its components on health and nutrition continue, offering hope to the sector.
Expopalma 2009 will give participants the opportunity to visit a varied exhibition showcasing national and international products and services of interest to the agroindustry and stakeholders of the sector.
Pre-conference technical visits will give participants the opportunity for different one-day programme options. The following are the options to visit:
-
-
Experimental Center El Palmar de La Vizcaína with its research in genetic varieties.
-
-
-
Experience in social development around oil palm cultivation.
A minimum and a maximum number of participants, of around 50, are required to make each one of the visits.
